I have to welcome the president of South Africa to my Social Rejects club. Speaking to Radio 702 talk show host, Redi Tlhabi, on the station yesterday morning Jacob Zuma has the gall to blame the current education crisis in the Limpopo province on Hendrik Verwoerd and the Apartheid government. It would appear this much criticised individual is intent on proving his critics right in that he is, indeed, a dick.

While Verwoerd may have been responsible for Bantu Education, I can’t see how he was involved in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and the changes made to the education system during the reign of numerous MEC’s and Ministers. How, for goodness sake, was the long dead Hendrik Verwoerd responsible for the current education debacle in South Africa? He isn’t, although he is surely grinning from the grave at the absurd suggestion that either he or apartheid is responsible.

For me, the question that begs to be asked is: How long can this government keep on blaming apartheid for our current reality before the ANC becomes accountable for having done nothing to eradicate those legacies of the past? Personally, although my opinion would not matter much, I am sick and tired of hearing why things are wrong, who is to blame and never a word is said about what’s being done to change things.

For crying out loud, while I understand the president was talking about a reality which is still in existence, the ‘blame apartheid brigade’ is a dying breed and the prez would do well to keep that in mind. The general public, currently disadvantaged or not, is clearly coming to understand the ANC’s motivations and the message they’re sending is clear. It does not have the best interests of the people in South Africa at heart, has no clue how to address the legacies of apartheid – which is why they still exist – and is more interested in passing the buck while lining their pockets with tax payers money.
