Ireland Robbed - FIFA Forgets "Fair Play" - Opinion

20 November 2009. Has FIFA forgotten the fair play policy it parades before the world. Since when is the referee's decision final in a situation where a player brings the game into disrepute by blatantly cheating. The world has seen the footage and the message is clear, FIFA has allowed cheating in the game to gain a result by refusing to allow a replay between France and Ireland. Had the blatant handball by Thierry Henry been blown up, the world may have seen France fail to qualify for the 2010 World Cup Soccer Finals in South Africa and Ireland qualify. FIFA didn't want that.

In 2005, FIFA invalidated the result of a World Cup qualifier between Uzbekistan and Bahrain following a referee's critical error. There is much ado about technology and what it can bring to the game, but keeping with the reality, the world has just witnessed a cheat, the failure of FIFA to acknowledge precadent set by itself and therefore the failure of a World Sport Governing Body to act swiftly, rationally, decisively and with common sense in protecting the good name of the beautiful game.

Ireland stand as a nation cheated and this, because of the way in which the affair has been dealt with and handled, will be remembered in history as the nation that was robbed by a cheat and 2 bad decisions. The one by the referee and the one by FIFA. So much for the "FIFA Fair Play" policy.

Who in France or anywhere in the world could complain if FIFA allowed a replay? Not a single person who respects and upholds the integrity of the game. But no, FIFA chose to create a bone of contention among fans and supporters and soccer bodies across the globe and eliminate any possibilty of restoring a sense of fairness to the elimination of Ireland from the South Africa 2010 Soccer World Cup.
